DIY Diwali Pooja at Home

Diwali is celebrated to mark the arrival of Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Ma Sita the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, back to their home town after an exile period of 14 years. Diwali is also the time when you can invoke goddess Lakshmi and invite her to your home. Goddess Lakshmi brings wealth, prosperity and money in your life. 


Doing a pooja by yourself can be unnerving, so Silver Emporium Bring to you a guide to a simple do it yourself pooja that you can perform at home by yourself. For our research, for this pooja, we consulted several Pandits and they have attested this pooja and its Vidhi. So you can rest assured that you are in good hands.

Steps to make panchamrut:

Panchamrita means five amruthams or amrtas, used in Hindu worship, which consists of raw milk, honey, sugar, yogurt , and ghee. In a bowl mix all of these ingredients and set it aside for later.  


The Pooja Vidhi:

There are four aspects of the Pooja: Namely Ganesh PoojaKalash Pooja, Laxmi Pooja and Saraswati Pooja. We will look at each aspect of the pooja in details below: 


1.      Before we begin: Selecting the direction in which you have to sit for the pooja, is of prime importance. For the pooja always sit in the east-facing direction.


2.     Cleanse: After that cleanse the area of the pooja with some water to get rid of any negativity. 


3.      Tilak and Mauli: Before you being the pooja, apply tilak and tie a mouli on your wrists. Kids and Men should tie a mouli on their right hand and married women should tie on their left.


4.      Light the Diya: Lighting a diya signifies the avahan of agni dev, the agnidevta plays witness to your pooja hence you should always begin your pooja by lighting a diya and placing a flower near it. 


5.      Ganesh Sthapana Vidhi- Each pooja must start off with Ganesh sthapana:

  • On a raised platform spread a red cloth,
  • On the platform on the right corner, make an asan for Ganesh out of wheat a little heap of wheat works just fine.
  • In that plate place an Idol of lord Ganesh. 
  • Take the Ganesh idol and bathe it with panchamrit, take a lot of care in doing so.
  • Then pour clean water and wipe the idol dry.
  • Place Ganesh back on his asan.
  • Shower the lord with Abil, Gulal, Kumkum, Rice and flowers.
  • Light a diya&Dhoop stick near Ganesh.
  • Offer jaggery Bhog to Ganesh.


6. Kalash Pooja- 


  • Tie a mouli around the neck of the kalash and the head of the coconut as shown in the video. 
  • Fill it with 75% of water and put one supari, one marigold flower, a clean coin, some durva and some rice in the Kalash. 
  • Put 4 tilaks on the kalash and the coconut, denoting 4 directions. 
  • Arrange five mango leaves in circular design at the neck of the kalash and place a coconut on it like shown. 
  • Take a Kalash and touch it to your head 3 times.
  • Make a bed of rice on the platform and place the kalash on it.


7. Lakshmi Pooja-


  • On the same platform take a small green piece of cloth; on it make a bed of moong.
  • Place the idol of Goddess Laxmi on the moong.
  • In a separate plate, take Goddess Laxmi’s idol and cleanse it with panchamrut,
  • Then clean it with freshwater and then pat it dry.
  • Place the idol back in the asan made out of moong.
  • Shower the goddess with Abil, Gulal, Kumkum, Rice and flowers.
  • Light a diya and dhoop next to the idol
  • Offer dry fruit bhog to the Goddess.


8. Saraswati pooja: 

Books related to education and accounts are worshipped on this day to invoke wealth and prosperity. 

  • Start by placing books in front of the lord.
  • Open them and on the first page, draw a swastika and other symbols as shown in the video.
  • Place nagarwelpaan, supari, abilgulal, and place fruit on each book.



9.  Aarti- Now place same sweets in front of the lord, do aarti of Ganesh, Kalash, Laxmi and Saraswati collectively. Once done, give the aarti to the lords, then turn and spread the aarti around the house and then take the Aarti yourself with both hands. 


10. Prasad: Seek blessings from the gods and ask for forgiveness for any mistakes made during the pooja. Share the Prasad with everyone and end the Diwali pooja by lighting diyas around the house.
